Freelance Work from Home: Why You Should be Doing It

There are several freelancing opportunities available all over the Internet as well as offline. However, there are few people who actually undertake freelance, because of their several ideas about Freelance, most of them unfounded. Here are some reasons why you should be doing freelance.

It pays good money: Gone are the days when freelancing was done by the misfits of the society, and the employers would throw some dollars onto them just to keep them happy. Freelance today has turned out to be a almost competitor to main stream jobs, both in terms of name as well as the financial aspect. You will find very few freelancers sitting at home doing nothing or working for peanuts. There is a lot of freelance to go around and there are a lot of companies and individuals who are looking for freelancers.

It is Completely Legal: Some people would be wondering whether working from home is legal or not, after all you are using your residential premises for a commercial endeavor. However, unless and until you are not part of a scam, or are actually running a scam, work at home is completely legal. Of course, this will also depend on whether you are working for any other company or not. Some companies do not allow their employees to work as freelancers. Most of them are not even allowed to visit freelance sites, let alone take up freelance projects.

It can be long term: If you are good at your work, you may actually find out that the clients stick to you and that you have appraisals and everything else just like someone having a mainstream career. This depends on your freelance work and how you see freelance online. Also, if all goes well you could actually start a small outfit of yours and take more work from people and outsource it to the employees.

Freelance Career Question #2: Which are the Best Freelance Sites?

Comparing a newbie into the Freelance world to a person who has just endeavored into space travel would be too dramatic, but it wouldn't be too wrong. Once a person leaves their day jobs and begin the journey of freelance, they come across many planets and organisms, some friendly and some not so friendly. If you consider Freelance to be a space journey, consider Freelance sites to be your friendly planets. Now that you know that the Freelance sites are your friendly planets, where do you find them, and more importantly, do they really exist? Well, this blog post tries to answer both your questions. Here are some of the best Freelance Sites around.

Freelancer: Previously known as getafreelancer, this is site has been around for quite a long time. According to the site itself it is

owned by Ignition Networks Pty. Limited, trading as Freelancer.com (ACN 134 845 748), with license from its wholly owned subsidiary, Plendo Sweden AB. Freelancer.com was started in February 2004 and is today one of the top online freelance marketplaces in the world.
Freelancer has progressed quite well in its six years of existence. It has made several changes to the site, and it recently made a complete graphic overhaul, that really adds some taste to the site. However, other than the cosmetic aspect of it, GAF, as the community still regards it as, is one of the better websites that offer freelance work.

All you have to do is to make a profile on the site, and then fill in all the details that are related to your professional life. Make sure that you make the profile an exhaustive read, or else you will end up just being on the site and not making any money out of joining the website.

Remember that GAF itself rarely offers any jobs. It is simply a common ground for the freelancer to interact with people who wish to offer freelance projects to the freelancers.

Once you have made your profile, you can browse through all the projects that are on offer and you can bid on them.

Freelancer is an integral part of the freelance web, and making a profile on the site will surely help you in expanding your freelance career. As the name itself suggests, freelancer is the site that is used by the world over to get a freelancer.

Scriptlance: Scriptlance is another website that is quite popular amongst the freelance community. The website follows the same program as Freelancer does. As Scriptlance and Freelancer are Bid for Work sites, the working of the sites is basically the same.

Here is a list of the other freelancing websites:

www.guru.com
www.odesk.com

Freelance Career Question: Is there Freelance Online?

The freelance career may be one of the most rocky careers in today's world. But then, this career is even the one of the most lucrative. Who wouldn't love to work in their pyjamas and work when they want to and take a break when they don't want to? Trust us, the sense of freedom you get in a empty cinema hall on a Monday morning while watching your favorite movie before your peers is outstanding. However, before we paint a rosy picture of freelancing, we should also tell you that getting freelance work is as difficult, if not more, than getting your first job, getting your promotion, or even dating the person you always wanted to!

Of course, when you begin freelance work from home, there are several questions that are unanswered, and just one of them is: Is there Freelance Online?

While the question seems quite simple and even blatant, we should tell you that the answer is as simple as taking candy from a baby, and the answer is - Seek and You shall Find. Here are some places where you can look for freelance projects, and we can be sure, these projects will surely add the require firepower to move your freelance career out of the dumps and into the skies. :)

The Freelance Web: Hold that search engine window. There is no Freelance Web as such. The Freelance Web is a phrase that we use to describe all the forums, the blogs (including this one), the communities and the forums that provide help and information to those looking for freelance work and freelance projects. As you spend some time over the Internet, you will find several of our brethren that will offer you information and networks that are quite active in the world of freelancing, the core of the freelance web. Tread carefully though, since you are no longer in Kansas anylonger.

You will find all kinds of people on the Freelance Web, people who will go out of the way to help you, people who will take out the time to hand hold you through the ropes, and people who will rob you of your time and resources, but then, we never said there's no risk on the Internets, did we?

Freelance Sites: One would ask, what is the difference between the Freelance Web and the Freelance Sites, aren't they one and the same, or, aren't Freelance Sites just a part of the Freelance Web? Well sure it is, but this is like the badlands and the governed areas we used to see in those dystopian movies of yore. There are several freelance sites that offer freelance projects and freelance work. These sites basically make freelance online the lucrative profession that it is. And simply because it is more systematic and scheduled than other options that you would look at if you are looking for freelance work.

There are several such websites, which you will find with a simple search online, which allow you to make accounts on their sites and access the projects that they have to offer. Once you bid on those projects, the ball starts rolling. There are many people who make accounts on these sites to get a freelancer. If the person who has posted this project likes your work, they will contact you and if everything goes well, you will soon have that freelance project!

Home Office: Software Requirements

Working as a freelancer and working from home is more often than not one and the same. When you are working from home, there are chances that you might be having a telecommuting position with a company and therefore are an employee of the company. If you are someone who takes assignments from various clients and works with one or more employers on a consultancy basis, you are not employed with any of them, but are just working on a 'work for hire' position.Though the two concepts may be different, the requirements will be the same. Here are some of the software requirements of a Home Office:

Word Processor: Provided that you have a compute in working order, you would require a word processing software. Word processing software is quite important for any office, even the home office, because the Word Processor software helps you in creating all the documents that you would need in a typical work day. Whether they are letters, reports, presentations or even email - a word processor can do it all. There are several word processors available in the market, with some of the open source word processors available for free.

Open Office is a open source word processor that has risen in fame since the past few years. It is a direct option if you do not wish to use any of the mainstream products for your word processing needs.

Accounting Software: Freelancing is a business, therefore it is evident that there will be some monetary transactions on which one has to keep their eye on. This calls for an accounting software,or else come tax day sand you will not know what happened with all your money. Having a tax software or an accounting software does not mean that you have done away with the accountant. The accounting software will just allow your expenses and earnings to be presented in a practical and systematic manner to the accountant when the right time comes.

Like word processing, there are some open source accounting software that are available. One has to be a bit careful while using accounting software because these software are according to the country that one is in.

TurboCash is one such Open source Accounting Software.

Anti virus/Malware: If you are working in a profession where the computers are the central force, you simply cannot afford to have a computer that has been clunking along with virus and malware. To prevent any damage to the computer at a later stage, you should ensure that the computer has a good antivirus system and malware system installed in it. There are some free antivirus software that are available, but they are only for home use.

Avira Anti Virus is a free anti virus that is quite popular.

The Freelancers Free Time: What to do with it.

A freelancer will have several things in abundance if he or she is systematic and consistent in delivering their assignments to their clients. One of these things is time. In fact, after some time, you will be worried and wondering as to what to do with the empty afternoons and the quick to come evenings. Here are some tips on how a Freelancer can send their free time:

Blog: Freelancing is all about networking. Blogging is considered to be, and actually is one of the best ways to network in the world of Web 2.0. You do not have to be completely professional like when you are blogging, and the blog can be about anything. Your paintings, your poems, your pet projects, your family photographs anything that your little heart desires.

Hobbies: We all had hobbies when we were young, such hobbies that had the potential to become our professions. Sadly, due to some reason or the other, we could never continue our hobbies into our adult life, leave alone making it a profession. The freetime that freelancing affords you is the best resource you can use for the enhancement and growth of your hobby. All you have to do is to d what you liked the best!

Family Time: What profession does not have the employee ignore the family? Well, if you are freelancing or working from home, you are more often than not at home, and thats the best time of your life. You can use the free time that freelancing offers you to spend time with your family and reconnect withb them, bringing back to life your own family life.

Health: Nine out of ten people in the world are unhealthy. The medical condition may be anything, but the truth stands for that most people are unhealthy, simply because they do not have the time to look after their health, or carry out the steps that are suggested by the doctor. With freelancing, you have the time - all you need is the will to look after your health.

The Importance of an Instant Messenger for a Freelancer

Some people hate freelancers, some people love freelancers. Some people hate freelancing and some people love freelancing. Of course, there are several reasons for each of the cases. One thing that we can be sure about is that business owner who hate freelancers and freelancing have a very good reason for hating the breed and creed - Incommunicado.

Let's face it, the traditional business worked, in fact thrived on the very fact that there were minions who would look down while walking and the ones who would own all the survey - the boss - walking past the cabins of these poor guys and girls just to affirm their power over them, and to tell to convince themselves that they had complete power over the employees. Sadly, with the debut of freelancing in even the most hallowed of corporate portals.

Which makes things difficult for us freelancers. In our times as a freelancer, we have met bosses and witnessed scenes that were straight out of some angst ridden movie and we had a starring role in the Old Vs New epic moment of the movie. But, like everything else in life - even this situation can be defused. And that too with a pretty simple tool - the Instant Messenger.

To put it lightly, the Instant messenger is one of the most important tools that a freelancer can ever have in their inventory. And true to its name, the Instant Messenger allows the person to receive messages instantly, from anyone in their contact list.

There are a lot many Instant Messengers today, and even Instant Messengers that club together all the Instant Messengers in one slick package - leaving you with no option but to have all your professional and personal contacts at your beck and call, or vice versa.

Well, whether you would like to add your freelance boss on your Messenger is entirely a different question.

Freelance Scams and how to stay away from them

If you have been freelancing for a while, you must have already have been bitten by the scam bug. There are many people all over the Internet who will dupe you out of your work and time. All they need is a chance. Here are some tips on how to keep away from Freelance Scams.

Work for Escrow Sites: One of the first steps that you can take to stay from scamsters is t work for Escrow sites. The sites like Freelancer and Scriptlance have their own system where the project poster has to Escrow a predetermined amount of money which is with the site until the project is completed. Once the project is completed, the money is released by the project poster. Of course, there are loopholes for this system too, but then, something is better than nothing.

If it's too good to be true, it is not true:: Once you begin to look for work online, you will see projects that scream "Earn $1000 in a day!". Well, if that guy could earn $1000 a day, why would be post a job application on a ad board, wouldn't be already b owning several television channels and putting the ads up there? The bottom line is, do not be carried away with great PR. Go through the freelancing opportunity and read it carefully, check for anything that seems weird. It probably is.

Be Inquisitive: Curiosity is always a pretty little cat. If you apply for a freelance gig and if you make it to the interview or something, and are finally at the 'any questions' part, ask. Remember, it is your time and your skill that is being used until you are finally paid for it. So, you have every right to ask where your skills are being used.

Once you make an account on oDesk, you will be able to access the number of projects that are available. You can then apply for these candidacies and then you will be interviewed by the employer. The interview can be carried out via oDesk as well as Skype, Gtalk or other internet messengers.

However, Getafreelancer is a very active community and things move very fast on Getafreelancer. Depending on the type of the project and other details, you might hear from the project poster within just a few hours.

Three Red Flags for the Freelance Scam Artist

For all practical purposes, freelancing is a business. You, the freelancer are the service or product provider and you have your clients. Like all businesses, there is the possibility of you actually being scammed by some of your clients into giving your services for free, with them not paying you. This is a routine happenstance in the world of freelancing. There is no freelancer in this world who has not been duped in freelancing, for amounts ranging from a few dollars to a thousand dollars. However, the good news is that there are several pointers that if you know about before you interact with a scamster, you can walk away from the interaction before you stand to lose money or time. Here are the three red flags for the freelance scam artist that you should be careful about:

Trying to Contact you out of the protocol: This is one of the most common tricks that the scamster may carry, which is mainly seen in the websites that have the 'Bid for Work' model. The scamster will contact you via the website and then lure you to their IMs or the e-mail ids and you will end up doing work for them, which is then dependant only on their good conscience to pay.

Be very careful while talking to the clients on such sites. Make sure that you do not break any protocol and neither do you allow them to break any. Of course, sometimes it may be possible that the person may tell you to contact them via a mail for better interaction and then return to the website when the required interaction is done with.

Giving you a lot of work, immediately: And this would typically end with 'Payment on end of project'. Of course, even this happens, but that is when the project is only for say two web pages, or a single graphic, or even ten articles. Make it a point to ask an escrow or half of the money upfront for any projects that are liable to continue for more than a month or so. You will be much happier this way.

Being Rude: Make no mistake about it, being a stiff upper lip is very different from being rude. Why would a person be rude to you if they actually want to have a long term relationship with you? Some people are of the thought that being rude lets them off many questions, and the freelancer will not question them too much if they are rude. And sadly, this works.

Resources Required for Working from Home

Working from home, or freelancing is quite a lucrative profile. However, you should remember that very few freelancers actually last in this line, and most of them start looking for a stable job within the year's end. This happens due to many reasons, one of them being that a person does not know what he requires to keep his freelancing business sfloat. This article speaks about the hardware requirements that a person needs:

Office Space at home: This is one of the most important requirements to ensure that your Work from Home or Freelancing stint is a successful one. If possible, you should dedicate an entire room of the house as your workspace. Make sure that this workspace is undisturbed and does not disturb anybody else in the house.

A Good Computer: You would also require a good computer to keep your freelancing business on tops. With the advent of the Internet, most of the freelancing jobs are Internet related. They may be about the graphics, or about the content, or even about web programming and programming. Therefore, if you have any of these skills and wish to freelance, you already have a great market. Even if you are not from these lines of profession, a computer is a good idea to keep records, or even to make documents and such.

A Good Internet Connection: The Internet has slowly become one of the most important ways of our communication. The Internet is today used for corporate, business as well as personal interaction. With the advent of e-commerce, the Internet is slowly becoming a huge market for jobs. If you are a programmer, writer or a graphics designer, you would get most of your freelance gigs over the Internet and on sites from the Internet. How do I become a Published Writer on the Internet?

One of the most lucrative types of freelancing is writing articles for the Internet today. Generally, this is termed as 'content writer' or 'copy writer'. A content writer may have to write articles on any given subject matter or even create the entire copy for a website. A copy writer would basically have to give a copy for a banner, or an advertisement that is doing the rounds on the Internet.

While these jobs are available in plenty, most of them are lapped up by individuals and organizations that have written material to prove that they are, indeed, content writers of copy writers. So, how does a content writer with no prior assignments? The answer is simple.

There are several websites that offer a free platform for writers to write their articles in their name. This not only allows the writer to make their profile on the Internet, but also acts as a learning platform for them to understand the finer aspects of writing for the Internet, like SEO, etc. Here is a list of the best sites that allow for free uploading of articles:

1 Ezine Articles: Probably the most famous of the article directories. The website is allows one to make their own account, select their niche and write articles about whichever subject they are comfortable in. The writer can also prepare a resource box that will give information about the writer.

Ezine also sends a useful newsletter regularly to inform the writer about new trends on the Internet and Internet writing.

2 Buzzle: Another famous article directory that concentrates more on the fact and knowledge sharing aspects of article directories. The user gets to make their own profile and can share their profile with others. No Newsletters.

3 Articleswave: A new kid on the block, but shows a lot of promise. Users can make an account and create a public profile.

There are several other article directories that are more or less popular. Have a look over the Internet and you will find many more.

4 Skimmers Nook: Another site offers writers to write their own content and upload them on the site. This site is directed towards the writers and is one of the few that allows poems, limericks and even jokes to be uploaded on the site.

Freelance Vs Work at Home

A few years ago, freelancing and working at home was considered to be the job of those people who could not face the outside world. Today, freelancing and working at home is supposed to be only for the fortunate few, how the times have changed! However, because Freelancing and working at home has just gained popularity, there are several misconceptions about the two. One common misconception is that Freelancing and Working at home is the same. However, it is not so. Here are some major differences between Working at home and Freelancing.

A company employs you if you are working from home: A work at home position is a job position that is offered by some companies. Working at home is beneficial for the employer as well as the employee.

If you are offered a work at home job, you are employed by the company, getting all the perks and having all the responsibilities of a company employee. You are on the payroll of the company and may be eligible for all the perks that are offered to the other employees of the company, like medical insurance, health insurance, pension, job security, etc.

Also, if you are working from home, it might be illegal for you to work for more than one company. This will generally be cleared in the agreement that you and the company will be signing.

When you are freelancing, you are not bound by one company. You can take any assignments from anyone that your little heart wishes. Of course, the job security in a freelancing job is only as much as you get paid for your assignment.

Here are the Three Golden Tips that you should keep in mind while freelancing.

1) Manage Your Time: The best part of freelancing is that you can work whenever you wish, the worst part of freelancing is that you can work whenever you want. You should be very careful if you are working form home, simply because you might end up sitting at home and playing games while you are actually meant to work. Remember, if you are freelancing, you have no supervisor or peer to egg you on, and you will know the wasted time only at the end of the month - when you cannot pay the bills because you didn't work at all!

2) Know Your Limits: The problem with freelancing is that a person tends to think that they can do anything and everything. If you are in a company, your skillsets are already decided upon and your work responsibilities are given to you within the first week. When you are freelancing, the biggest problem is that you are the only person who decides whether you can do a particular job, and by the time you find out that you cannot do it, it's too late. Therefore, make it a point to understand your abilities and make the best out of them. Of course, this does not mean that you should not experiment. But any experiment that does not sit good in the realms of practicality and logic may not end as well as you would want them to.

3) Have Fun: The basic reason that you stopped a day job is because your life was getting wrecked. Freelancing is good money, but if you continue to be as workaholic as you were during the job, you are not exactly getting all the benefits of being a freelancer. So, whenever you can, take some time off... go with the folks for a picnic in the middle of the week, catch a chick flick or a romcom or a action adventure in the middle of the day - Understand Your Freedom.
